A Letter From Tom

All:

Just an update on our progress. Richard has updated the blog for the latest additions since Christmas, but at the rate things are progressing, he needs to work faster on the Blog updates

This week saw the installation of most of the fascia and soffits and some of the upper moldings. The copper for the roof also started ( we took a second mortgage out on the house to pay for the copper, please save your old pennies for the next roof!)

The front entrance is framed out and the new door and entrance is installed. The stained glass is spectacular especially when the morning light shines through it.

The rough framing on the third floor master bedroom is partially done and we started on the drain for the house. I think we have cornered the market on PVC, so you may want to buy shares in Charlotte PVC products before we make our next purchase.

Tomorrow the roofing for the house will be delivered, the roof should go on next week. I am really looking forward to that so we can get rid of the leaks and drips every time it rains.

Next week should see the siding start to go on.

The latest “disaster” was in the pre-painting of the soffit/fascia/corner/trim. After hours/days/months of anguish choosing the right colors we should have just used the Mr. Blanding method, seven gallons of yellow, two gallons of red and four gallons of blue… The coater did a great job on the stock for the garage, but somehow botched up ALL of the material for the house - about 2,000 feet. Looks like they used the right colorant tint, but wrong base. I did not realize it until almost half was installed and Richard walked in and said, “that is a different color”. Anyway, even if we had seen it upfront, we could not have wait 2 -3 weeks to have it recoated. The coater agreed to refund the cost of the coating, but if we decided to repaint, it will cost a lot more. We will see how it all looks when we are done. It is lighter and “tealer” than we wanted which reduces the contrast with the rest of the siding material.

Phoenixville Invades Lewes!!!!!

Bill & Jan Evans, our old neighbors from Phoenixville; now that didn't come out right....we mean our friends that we used to have in Phoenixville; that didn't come out right, either.

Anyway - these two people spent the day with us....we all had a great time....

really miss seeing them all the time....

The Porch and Front Door

We had purchased a beautiful piece of stained glass and had it inserted into an old door. The shop that did the work also built the door frame/jam as well as added some additional matching stained glass around the door.

One photo is the porch from the outside (without the door assembly inserted) and the other from inside the living room looking at the back of the door.

Soffits and Fascia

Aren't you impressed that I'm using all this architectural terminology? If not, bear with me.....for those of you who are learning along with me, lets pause for some definitions......
sof·fit - the underside of an architectural feature, as a beam, arch, ceiling, vault, or cornice.
fas·ci·a - any relatively broad, flat, horizontal surface, as the outer edge of a cornice, a stringcourse, etc.

These photos show the workmen building the soffits and fascia. We had them pre-painted. Notice Tom showing Jerry, our main carpenter how it all fits together.

Sorry y'all - with the Holidays and all, didn't get a chance to update the blog. Lots been happening. Here are a few pictures of the street being dug up and sewer and water lines being tapped. We have the water main AVAILABLE...but it's still not hooked up to anything. Still have to brind bottled water to the work site and use our neighbors water hose.
